Off The Beach News

Hey there everyone,
we made it to the end of the 23/24 Summer season and went out with a whimper rather than a bang. It was a beautiful day for pretty much anything other than sailing- kayaking, swimming, fishing, even, (God forbid) jet skiing! But alas, we were there to sail, so sail we did. Or at least we gave it a fair crack. 26 hopefuls set out through waist deep seaweed on the beach, pushed along by a tantalizingly light breeze all the way out to the start boat, only to have them up anchor and head further out to sea in the hope of finding a bit more wind. Watching the keelboats even further out going absolutely nowhere did not instill any confidence in the fleet and indeed some skeptical (or intuitive) people actually headed back to the beach before the abandonment flag went up. They missed all the fun, as it was such a perfect day (except for sailing). People were swimming, brrr, and dancing, and once Bill M and Doc Taylor came past in Woodsy, dressed in their finest Copa Cabana outfits, serving up Mai Tai's to everyone, well the party really got going!

All too soon the fun was over and the reality of a long drift back the beach brought us all down to Earth. Some of us even submitted to the indignity of being towed back to the Club. Perhaps we should impose a two Mai Tai limit. The rest of the fleet took advantage of the slight zephyr of breeze to high tail it back to the beach post haste, and none too soon. As the water turned to glass and Greg L could be seen poling his way home with his tiller extension gondola style, with the sound of “O Sole Mio” drifting across the water from the Musos up on the deck and the sun sinking slowly into the sea, I couldn’t think of a more fitting end to the season. What the heck am I talking about!? 15 to 20 knots with some screaming reaches and waves breaking over the stern as you plowed head first into that seaweed bank on the beach would have been much more fitting. Ah well, you will just have to show up for the winter series to get some of that action.

Thanks as always to the race team this week of Geoff and Super Deidre in Start, Bill M and Doc Taylor in Woodsy and for their first run in a rhib, we had Neil and Lorraine W in Sutherland. The were all at the boat dock at 11.00 to set another on water start for the Keelboats and even had to ferry out the crew of Vincitore as she was parked  outside the marina due to the low tide. Doc said he asked for a tip after delivery and was told, “Here’s a tip, put your bungs in ,You’re about to sink !” Nice one Doc!

Seriously though, my sincerest thanks to everyone that helped out and helped me out all through the season. OTB Captain isn’t a very hard job when there’s a willing bunch of members to pitch in when needed. It’s generally the same old faces, but we are getting better. And thanks also to everyone that showed up to sail, after all, its not much good having a course set and no boats to sail it.

While we’re on the subject of helpers, now is the time to nominate your choice for Club Person and Junior Club Person of the Year. Think hard on this as there are lots of worthy candidates, and most are very much behind the scenes.

That’s about all from me for this season, but just a final reminder if you intend to leave your boat in the yard. There is still plenty of wind about ( just not on Sundays ) so make sure you tie the old girl down securely ! My thanks to Matt W for rescuing mine last week. It was facing the wind, nose in to the fence and ended up a long way from where she was left !

Cheers All and see you in October, Pete Chippy

Sunday Sounds AprilApril Happenings

Off The Beach News

Howdy Gang.

It looks like with the end of the summer season nearly upon us, the weather is finally coming up trumps. Last Sunday was just a beautiful day to be on the water. A little light on in the wind department but still enough to get two races in. And with SBSC hosting the Phaedrus B14 Cup, RO Geoff opted for course 4, windward/returns, to suit their style. Although there was only three B14`s (two and a half really as Paul F said he was there in body but defiantly not in spirit as he is still getting over his month long leurgy), they still made their presence felt. Especially Brett F and able crewperson Grace L, who were roaring around the cones like there was no tomorrow! Needless to say, the took home the bickies, or rather, the bottles at the end of the day. Thanks Ewan for your generous sponsorship of this event.

A bit of a mixed fleet for the rest of us. 18 boats all up with most of our classes represented, with the exception of the 420`s. Where have they gone? Aurelia M and Kristen K were on rhib duty and Zac L, Finn M and Ollie B were roaring around in the blue rhib testing out its shiny new hydraulic steering, so hopefully they will all be back soon to terrorise those Laser sailors! Talking of Lasers, as there was no sign of Murray M last week, I was left wondering if he was being true to his word. After soundly beating Grace L the week before in one race he declared, “I have reached my pinnacle in sailing, this will never happen again so I might as we give up now!” I sure hope not Muzz, Sundays on the water wouldn’t be the same without you.

Sorry Folks, back to the racing. Race 1 was sailed in light breeze with lots of shifts to keep the punters guessing, so the normal finishing order didn’t apply.

Race 2 saw the wind easing even further so I was quite happy that Geoff put the Div 2 start first as that meant we were finished and back on the beach while, some of the other boats still had a lap to go with the wind down to about 2-3 knots. Any mistakes made in race 1 were not made by the experienced sailors in the second race 2. Not so the inexperienced, so that put the results back to where they should be.

That was about it for the day. Thanks again to the race team. We had nearly as many people on duty as there were yachts on the water with RO Geoff on Start with Super D ( freshly back from a stint with Gamblers Help, so hopefully that will be an end to the high priced chips ), on Woodsy we had James E , Greg L and Simon H, while as mentioned earlier, Sutherland was crewed by Aurelia M, Kristen K and along for the ride was Owen Thompson on a visit back from Switzerland. There must be something in that Swiss water as Owen seemed about a foot taller than last time I saw him! The with the Trio of Terror in the blue rhib, it made for 11 people on duty! That must be a record for a non regatta day surely.

If you were wondering where Gingerbread Bill M was last week, He took his trusty new Impulse up to Yarrawonga for the State Titles and came a creditable 7th in a strong fleet of 17 boats, good job Bill.

Okay, we are down to the wire with just one more sail left for the 23/24 Summer season, so as  I’ve said before, Get Yer Bum In A Boat and get on the water. It’s your last chance and the weather will be PERFECT, I promise!

Cheers for now, Pete Chippy.

Duty boat crew.........its always wonderful to see the youth taking on duty with enthusiasm.
As Rob Campbell would say "What could possibly go wrong?". Thanks for your help Owen!

April Happenings

Off The Beach News

Howdy gang.
Another nice day on the water last Sunday with 22 lucky sailors taking part. The wind was very light but at least the expected rain held off for the whole day, so small blessings eh? Although the breeze was down in strength it stayed in for the entire first race with a steady shift to the right, so if you went left off the line you were a winner. And guess what? No one sailed the wrong course! Another highlight was young Nathan Anderson getting his first hooter for crossing the finish line first in Div 1. It wont be long before he’s nipping on Dad James’ heels and maybe lining up with another junior in a 420 perhaps.

RO Geoff set a nice course with the help of an all junior team in the RHIBs. Nick M and Jess L were in Sutherland looking after the bottom end and Abbey E and Matt W in Woodsy set the top marks. These guys and gals did a great job and their experience sailing at lots of other regattas showed through with a keen understanding of where the marks needed to be without Geoff having to second guess them. Another nice thing the ‘Youngens’ brought to the course was a bit of music rolling across the water. As a Tina Turner fan though, I can say from experience that it can be hazardous attempting the Nutbush in a Sabre. But hey, what are you gunna do when the music takes control!

The other thing that was rolling across the water was Nick’s BOOMING voice letting rip at a large power boat that came roaring through the middle of the course. I reckon he would have given Mono a run for his money! Also good to see Super Deirdre back from her week in Las Vegas none the worst for wear. Although we all know, ‘ What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!’ But if David has to up the price of a bowl of chips, you might guess why.

After a bit of a course change at the top end, we all lined up for a mass start for race two in dying wind, only to have it drop out completely right after the hooter. Super D put up the postponement flag but the writing was on the wall, and two minutes later it was followed by the ‘Bugger off home’ flag. This was disappointing but in the end it was the right call as by the time we hit the beach, the wind had gone completely. All’s well that ends well though as we were packed up early and with daylight savings over, we were all up on the deck enjoying a pre  Vegas tax bowl of chips and watching the most magnificent sunset over perfect glassy water, magic!

Only two sails left for the summer season so don’t miss out. Next week we are being joined by the B14’s for the second day of their state titles. They are joining in our race with their own start- very civilised of them to allow us to be part of the fun.

Now if you feel that you haven't had enough sailing this season, and lets face it, we have missed out on a lot of days due to poor conditions, Bill Manning is organising another Winter series like last year. It will be a simplified course held on alternate Sunday mornings to coincide with the keelboat Brass Monkey series. Bill is seeking expressions of interest for sailors and helperouters to make this viable, so find Bill and let him know where you fit on his list. Also something to think about for the end of the season is the Club Person and Junior Club Person of the year, so think back and give a thought to someone you would like to nominate for these prestigious titles. There are a lot of hard working, selfless people in the Club so even to be nominated is gratifying.

That’s about all for this week, thanks everyone that helped out launching and retrieving the patrol boats, Greg, Fiona and Erik, yer blood’s worth bottling.

Cheers for now, Pete Chippy

A very kind offer from Ewan to Finn and Zac to sail his B14 on Sunday, which included a masterclass from the master himself. The boys had a great time, although could have enjoyed a bit more breeze.

April Happenings

Off The Beach News

Howdy Gang.
What a day we had last Sunday eh? Quite a crowd ventured out for the penultimate Club Championship day, 32 boats in all. That’s about the best fleet we’ve had all year. And with every division represented the slightly soggy conditions early on made for some confusion on the start line with multiple flags up that were hanging in a bit of a wet clump. Rob F and the Sharpie gang (not a seventies glam rock band) both took off on the wrong start and had to double back. Rob still managed to “smoke the Cobras” even after giving them a decent head start (their words not mine). Sally Wemyss in her Sabre and Nathan Anderson joined in for a lap or two to get the feel of racing and I’m sure they’ll be back for more.

Being a Club Championship day meant different courses for the two races and that seemed to confuse some bods a bit. I’ll use Div 2 for an example. Fiona M forgot that course one is ‘2’ triangles and course two is ‘2’ sausages. The easy way to remember that is that ‘one’ is an odd number and triangles have an odd number of sides, whereas ‘two’ is an even number and sausages have an even number of sides. That sausages have 2 sides, the bottom and the top, is often demonstrated at Bunnings where the onion goes on the bottom and the sauce goes on the top. Then in race two ( remember the sausages) she headed back for a third lap, letting some undeserving character past for first place. So to recap; course one, odd, triangles, course two, even, sausages, Div 2, two laps. Simples! Other Divisions can work out their own system, it shouldn’t be too hard. As for me going through the start line instead of the finish line? Well, no excuse, that was just plain stoopid!

Apart from those and a few other ‘incidents’, it was a very pleasant day on the water. The rain held off and the wind, although light, stayed in and had just enough shifts to make it interesting. With Deirdre away, on a girls gambling trip apparently, Drew M filled in as assistant RO with Geoff back in the RO chair. Simon H crewed in Woodsy with the honorable John Wemyss (like dreams) and Katrina M roped in son Charlie to help her on Sutherland. Thanks all and Alister M, who did the launch and retrieve of the boats despite having a bung foot.

From all reports, the SBSC contingent at Lake Boga made up nearly a quarter of the fleet and had great success all round, even on the water! Listening in to the conversations in the yard made me regret not going again. Ah well, next year for sure.

One snippet, from a completely unreliable source, led me to put two and two together and come up with a perfectly believable conspiracy theory in regards to Gingerbread Bill M’s mast coming down in Sunday’s first race. Apparently the stays on a Tasar are exactly the same as the stays on an Impulse and it seems Bill left his laying on the ground near the lake only to have them disappear. It then turns out that a certain Tasar sailing person with a fierce rivalry with another Tasar sailor (maybe related, maybe not) had scooped them up and given them to a third party to return to the supposed ‘owner’. This third party (maybe a mafia hitman, maybe not) then returned them to the aforementioned Tasar sailor at a secret drop site without either vehicle coming to a complete stop. Not suspicious at all so far. Eventually the well travelled stays found their way back to the rightful owner via a circuitous route , whereupon they failed in spectacular fashion as Bill was leading the pack for certain victory. Was this an unfortunate accident? Or was Bill the victim of mistaken identity in a much more sinister plot? We may never know!

Cheers for now, see you all this Sunday. Only a few sails left so don’t miss out!
Pete Chippy
