Off The Beach News

Hey there guys and gals,

In the words of that great Aussie icon - "Where the bloody hell were ya"? On a day with great sailing conditions, sunshine and a steady-ish wind, we could only manage eleven boats on the water....very sad! Admittedly, the water looked like a really bad coffee, and tasted about the same, but you didn't have to drink it, just sit on top of it!

All that aside, the boats that did come out all had a ripper sail. The wind was quite brisk to start with, around twelve knots, but eased back to around eight for most of the day. There were a few holes here and there, but nothing too bad, and mixed in with a few really good wind shifts, there were some big gains too be made if you knew where to look, (I didn't know where to look obviously).
It was good to see Glenn Lazzar out on an RS Feva with Xavier Graham, teaching him a few pointers (they did know where to look)! A big shout out also to Duncan and Hamish McColl, who travel longer to get here each week than they do sailing. Hamish will miss most of the season as he trains with the Fire service over summer. Great stuff Ham! Of the eleven boats we did have sailing, there were four 420s, three Tasar's, a Tera, a Windrush and a solitary Sabre. Where have all the Sabre's gone? They can't all have bad backs, bung shoulders or drinkers elbow. Come on you lot, fire up, the waters not that cold!

The weather is looking a bit soggy this week, but things will change and I'm sure we'll get a sail in, guaranteed. Would I lie to you? Probably. Anyway, that's enough drivel for this week. Get yer bum in a boat and get on the water!

Happy Birthday

Wishing a Happy Birthday to our Club Person Of The Year for 2021-2022 Greg Lowe. It's his last year in the 40's........and because I write the newsletter and I am his wife, I am letting you all know that Greg is celebrating his date of birth, today 19th October. I'm sure you may see Greg at the club over the next few nights waiting for someone to hug him, or shake his hand, and maybe......buy him a beer!! (insert wink!!). Opening Day 2022-23

What a perfect day for Opening Day 2022/23. After three years of interrupted openings (we seriously forgot we had to do this and can anyone remember how we do an opening day?) perfect breeze greeted both the OTB and Keel Boat fleets on the water allowing for a course of about 11/2 hours. The Commodore and guests aboard the best dressed boat “Corinthian”, courtesy of Peter Hollings, were situated just off the club for a sail past to salute the new Commodore, Tony Christmas.

It was fantastic to see a great turn out for the formalities upstairs after racing, even though we were missing a huge number of members either still up north, overseas or otherwise engaged, but the number of about 120 members and guests enthusiastically ushered in the new season in style. It was great to welcome Niesje Hees from RBYC and Bronwyn Evans from McYC along with Antonella Celi and Pierre Uri from the MPSC. Local State Independent hopeful, Charelle Ainslie officially opened the season after Commodore Tony Christmas welcomed members and guests and talked about the genesis of the club. Andrew Clark was an apology, as was his cannon, due to a cold, however our flag raisers in Finn Meijer and Zac Lowe raised the flag as the anthem was belted out.

As the formalities ended, the concertina doors were opened and revealed a Snooks catered spread for the ages, which was greedily devoured by all in attendance. A great job again as always by Snooks Catering. The season is now here! Lets hope we have an incredible season with no prangs or protests on the water, no incidents of any description, merely a season of fun, family and friendly competition at the best club on the bay.

I wanted to thank everyone that participates in the working bee held a couple of weeks ago. I heard from a number of dignitaries on the Opening Day how great the Club was looking including the lawn areas.

A big thank you also to David and the team from Snooks Catering who put on a great lunch/afternoon tea which kept everyone satisfied with many continuing the party at the bar until 6pm.

Thank you to the boat owners that dressed their boats and themselves up for the sail past and for everyone that sailed past Corinthian and gave 3 cheers.

Unfortunately, this year we were unable to herald the opening with cannon fire as Clarky was struck down by a bug. We will have to aim the cannon for a symbolic firing in the near future.

No doubt we are all looking forward to a wonderful season. See you all on the water.

Off The Beach News

Hi Gang.

Well we're off and flying for 22/23, and didn't we have a cracker of a day for the Santa Cup. Sorry, that sounds like a racetrack on Mario Cart. The Commodore's Cup was held in excellent conditions, with a twelve knot breeze and a nice bit of sunshine. It was a bit shifty, but then, at Safety Beach, we wouldn't expect it any other way. We had thirteen boats on the start line and eleven finishers. Not a bad effort for Day one, and I'm sure that numbers will rise in the next few weeks as we all shake the cobwebs off and the walking wounded return to match fit.

I'm sure that the opening festivities will be covered in detail elsewhere in the Enews, so I'm not going to say too much about it, except to remark on the quality of the food and the briefness of the speeches. Great work Tony on your first Opening as Commodore and to everyone else who had a hand in making it such a great day.
This week is round one of the Red Dolphin series, so dust off your boats and yourselves and get your bums on the water. It doesn't get any better than this!

What's On In October

Keelboat News

A great weekend of sailing and socialising to kick off the season. The nasty weather cleared in time for the first Friday twilight and 12 boats took to the water. Congratulations to Peter Morrison and crew ‘Fransiska’ on their win. Another four boats finished before the 7.30pm sunset, however the wind dropped out towards the end and the rest (having rounded the yellow pile) were DNF’s – so close! Thanks to duty boat Vamonos, Amanda and Elaine in the tower.

Sunday’s fleet were out on the water early with their flags flying high. Thanks again to Peter Hollins for hosting a nice party onboard the Commodore’s yacht ‘Corinthian’ for the sail past. And also thanks to Elaine and Judy in the tower and Geoff, Deirdre and Chipper on the start boat for a successful race. Results for the Commodore’s Cup were Div. 1: Vincitore and Div. 2: Fransiska (with one POB I believe!)

Now on the Melbourne Cup long weekend, you can now be part of the Rudder Cup race to Devonport, the oldest ocean race in Australia, a qualifier race for Hobart.

November 9^th & 13^th - Bowman Course – Master the Pointy End

“Master the bow position and you will always have a boat to sail on. Skill up and be confident and you can go places with it. The Bloody Long Walk

Taking place on Sunday 16^th October: It starts at Quarantine Station and finishes at Martha Cove Marina. Martha Cove have sent us the attached notifications. The course goes past the Club, under the channel and finishes at Martha Cove. I expect walkers will pass the Club from mid-afternoon. There are no road closures and the car parking/pick up area is in Martha Cove, not on the foreshore by the Club. For more details please click here.

Rear Commodore’s Mutterings

Hi Members,

A huge thanks to all that turned out last Sunday for the working bee. What a great turnout! There certainly seems to be some enthusiasm as we transition into what is hoped will be a “normal” sailing season. As we have an early start on Sunday, I am looking for a couple of volunteers to launch the rescue boats on Saturday, also refuel and blow up the marks in readiness for the sail past on Sunday and racing afterwards. This will greatly alleviate time pressures for Sundays timeframe. If you are able to help, please contact me on 0430474735.

With regard to rostering, Pete Chipperfield does and awesome job of putting this together. It is a thankless task and one that without it, we wouldn’t sail. That said, it is, as a responsibility of being a member of our club, you do your duty and if you can’t, please organise a swap to ensure those who want to go sailing, can go sailing. Pease inform Peter on your availabilities to ensure we can complete the roster for the second half of the season.

Calling for volunteers! The sailing committee is looking for volunteers to get involved in rescue boat driving. The club is blessed to have fantastic modern boats to assist in the facilitation of racing at our club, but we need help in driving them. If you are a social member at our club and would like to get involved in this side of the club, then please call me to register your interest and we’ll make sure you get a guernsey as much as you are able to contribute. again, either call me on the above number or email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. Working Bee

What a great day with weather to match.
Today we must have had around 30 to 40 volunteers who all did there fair share of work.
What we achieved:
* Chipper and team repaired 16 tables.
* All the grounds were cleared, weeded etc
* The whole front of the Club was weeded and trimmed
* Fiona gerni’d “everything”
* Training boats cleaned
* All windows cleaned inside and out
* Drinks shelving on the deck restained

Plus a hundred odd jobs done, all washed down with a beer and sausage sizzle! Thanks to everyone for a huge effort that achieved so much. Looking forward to season opening this weekend!!! John Matheson

Off The Beach News

Hi Gang,

Well it’s almost here, only four more sleeps! Just remember, the Commodore’s Cup starts earlier than our normal race time. We will be having the traditional sail past to salute the Commodore - keel boats at 10.30 followed by a massive OTB fleet at 10.45. Then the race (only one race of about 60-70 minutes), keelboats first warning at 10.45 and OTB straight after at 11.07.

A couple of things to remember:
Be respectful to the Commodore and other dignitaries aboard their boat, no rude gestures or gobbing off. Remember, Tony is a personal friend and relation of Santa and one word in the right ear and you’ll be on that naughty list quicker than an elf to the dole queue on Boxing Day!

Be aware of the keel boats before the start. There will be a lot of them and if the wind is light, calling starboard on a ten tonne boat with no steerage is not a good move. Just ask Joe Warren, who tried that a few years back and ended up with two boats instead of the one he sailed out on.

Lastly, be aware of the other OTB boats. Many of us haven’t been on the water since last season and could be a bit rusty. So don’t break anything on day one. Have a good sail, dust off the cobwebs then get back to the club for all the opening day stuff that is planned.

That’s about it for this week. Thanks to everyone that came to the working bee last Sunday, it was a great turnout and the club and yard are looking fantastic for Opening Day. Cheers all, Pete Chippy

The summer season has finally arrived!! You will find the Notice of Race for the 2022-23 Season HERE.

Club member Peter Hollins has kindly offered his beautiful old world cruising ketch ‘Corinthian’ to host the Commodore and she will be anchored just outside the line of yellow piles, out from the clubhouse carpark. And a general reminder for this summer’s racing to please clear the MC channel as soon as possible to ease any congestion for other boaties, especially as the weather warms up.

Please make sure you have everything ready for the start of the new season. This includes:

Cat 5 Safety Declaration
Current Insurance Certificate
Revalidation of AMS or ORC certification
