Off The Beach News

Welcome to Chippa & Rob’s Motor Boat news!!

Hi all - as the season fast approaches we thought it timely to add some information about patrol boats and what to be mindful of each and every week.
We are trying to ensure that the boats are good to go SAFELY each week so that sailors can sail! We hope that’s sufficient motivation.
Were also trying to set up some simple processes ( they’re not hard) that might minimize damage to boats and or trailers.
Please if you’re on duty the duty includes some basic operational and safety requirements.
A few things come to mind:
  1. LAUNCHING & RETRIEVING – If you are involved in the launch and or retrieval of the boats, please make sure that the propellor is barely in the water whilst sliding backwards into water or approaching trailer. PROP UP - PROP UP - PROP UP!! You’ve most likely all heard us yell. Motors do not need to be all the way trimmed down, if anyone wants any assistance or training with how to best launch and or retrieve safely, don’t hesitate to get in touch please.
  2. FUEL - Red RHIBS fuel gauges are inaccurate, meaning there 30% more empty than they appear on the gauge. If you’re on duty or on a RHIB please ensure the fuel is topped up if it’s anywhere near half. Fuel card is either on one of the boats or on the board at the back of the shed.
  3. LIFE JACKETS – Each RHIB has 4 life jackets and are marked W for Woodsy and S for Sutherland. Please make sure at the start and end of duty all life jackets are returned to the respective homes. NB If you change boats or remove a lifejacket for any reason it’s your responsibility to look after the life jackets and get them back home!
  4. COMMUNICATION  – If there are any issues or observations you make please record those on the whiteboard that will sit in the shed above the small table each week. NB If any accidental damage occurs to ANYTHING it is your responsibility to communicate this to Chippa or Rob.

Thanks, and that’s about it for now and we look forward to seeing you all on the water soon!

Rob & Chippa

Winter Fun Friday Series

Firstly, the Keelboat sub-committee (and I’m sure all the Friday racers) would like to extend a big thank you to Andrew Arblaster.  While this was a fun and casual pilot series, the SBSC tower still needed to be manned every race and Andrew stepped up week after week.  And of course we’ve all enjoyed reading Andrew’s race reports.  Thanks also to Dawn Clark who assisted Andrew regularly – getting in some good tower practice!  Finally, to all the skippers and crew who joined in the Friday races - whether you were a regular starter or just occasionally bunked off work when the weather was just too good not to sail – thank you for supporting this pilot series. Enjoy reading Andrew’s final race report …

A perfect day for a sail.  Seven boats and 25 crew entered the race enjoying the sunshine and light breezes. The forecast was for 10-15 Kt north-west winds.  At start time winds were very variable.  The decision was made to change to a shorter course and Course 13 was selected to enable all boats to finish in the allotted time.  E’toile made the start of the day crossing on her nominated time.  Balance was only 2 seconds late, Shimmer 13 seconds, La Mer 15, Amity 17, Marrakesh (fresh from the Boat Works with new antifoul) 28 seconds, and Yknot 30 seconds.  All very good starts given the tough conditions.

The early starters had a very difficult first two legs, with La Mer and Amity only just moving towards the mussel farm.  14 Minutes after the start the breeze started to fill in from the west, giving the later starters an advantage.  Marrakesh went out to the right and was the first boat round the mussel farm.  La Mer was last around, unable to recover from the slow start.  E’toile held their position.  Shimmer, Yknot and Balance followed taking advantage of the stronger breezes at the time they started.

Marrakesh retained her lead at R1 but Shimmer and Yknot were closing the gap.  Marrakesh held the lead as the boats passed Martha point, but Shimmer was closing fast.  Shimmer caught up to Marrakesh and looked like they were going to pass to leeward.  Marrakesh retrimmed their sails and increased speed.  Shimmer then set themselves for buoy room around the yellow pile and passed as the boats gybed. Shimmer won the race followed by Marrakesh, Yknot, Balance and Etoile.  The race for the final placing was the most hard fought of the day with La Mer having a speed advantage on Amity.  Amity managed to hold them off and finished 2 seconds ahead of La Mer, another 10 metres and the result would have been reversed.

The overall series went to count back with Yknot having more 1st placings than Marrakesh, and Shimmer took out third place.  Marrakesh and Yknot competed in all 9 races.

The win by Shimmer was the start of a big weekend.  Shimmer sailed in the ORCV Coastal Sprint on Saturday for a 1st in PHS and second in both AMS and ORC.  Patriot was first on AMS and ORC and second on PHS.   Shimmer then participated in the Brass Monkey winter series for a second place to Vincitore.

Dawn Clark assisted in the tower with her great record keeping and timing.  We had a guest appearance from David Donaldson who assisted with the finishing.

The series has shown that there is interest in a Fun Friday series.  The fleet has built over the nine races and we have had 14 boats compete in the series, with one race attracting eight boats.  Hopefully, the committee will consider running the series next year.

Off The Beach News

Hi there OTB Gang.

Only four more weeks until the start of the new sailing season, can you believe it!! As promised, click this link 2023/24 Sailing Program Preliminary Roster for your viewing pleasure. Please have a good look, check out any dates that are significant to you and email or message me with your available, or more importantly, unavailable dates for rescue boat duties.
Remember, if all goes to plan you only have to do two duties for the season and possibly less. If you don't have a boat license yet, I strongly recommend attending Rob and Fiona's course in Frankston next week, so you are all sorted for the season.

I'll give it a week for replies then do a preliminary roster and send it out to give you all a chance for changes then we can post it on the website.

Cheers Everyone, looking forward to hearing from you all.
Pete Chippy, OTB Captain

Boat License Course

As the season nears closer, the club would like to encourage more members to obtain their boat license to assist with rescue boat duty. We all know that many hands make light work, but with some of our keen volunteers not having a license, our options for boat drivers can be restricted.

Club members Rob Campbell and Fiona Lowe work for Victorian Boat Training, and will be running a boat license course at Frankston Life Saving Club on Thursday 21st September. The course starts at 6pm and will take approx. 4 hours including testing. Once you have passed the tests, you will be handed a Transport Safety Victoria Certificate. You need to take this certificate to VicRoads to transfer into license. The cost of this course is usually $130, however all SBSC members will be given a $20 discount. Please follow the link to book yourself in to this course. Click this link Victorian Boat Training

Gotcha Mono!

Well here is the proof that our dear Rear Commodores boat has indeed touched the ground.  We have all been told many times that this has NEVER HAPPENED.

Junior Club Captain Matt Whitaker is the proud new owner of a 49er sail boat. His smile shows how happy he is, and how keen he was to get in on the water. As seen here in less than 4 knots of wind on Monday afternoon, Matt is really looking for some strong breeze very soon.

Winter Fun Friday Series (Race 8)
With a wind forecast of South moving SE and dropping to less than 20 Knots, Course 13 was selected as it is the shortest course and provided a windward-return.  We had five boats enter with 14 crew.  Best start was Cirrus on 10 seconds, Marrakesh and Yknot (20), Etoile (30) and Balance 50 seconds.  However, Balance was the only boat to make the yellow pile in one tack saving considerable time.

The wind moved to SSW during the starting sequence, dropping and becoming variable.  It was a slow run to R1 with the larger boats only achieving 3-4 knots.  Balance found an area of no breeze around the mussel farm.

Cirrus was first sighted around Martha Point followed by E’toile.  Marrakesh and Yknot had a tacking duel between Martha Point and the yellow pile.  Yknot has superior speed and height in these conditions.

Cirrus maintained her lead over Etoile to take the win.  Yknot and Marrakesh followed at 3-minute intervals, with Balance recovering from the area of no wind a further 7 minutes behind.  It was a pleasant winter afternoon on the water.
Dawn Clark assisted in the tower making sure all procedures were followed.

The next race on Friday 15 September is the FINAL RACE in the pilot Winter Fun Friday series.  Yknot and Marrakesh are only separated by one point in the series’ lead.  We can expect some tactical sailing from these two boats which will be great to watch. Shimmer, Cirrus and E’toile will be battling it out for the minor podium place.

SailSys – Get Ready for Summer Racing

It may feel like it’s only Spring, but the Summer Season is fast approaching!  THANK YOU to those Skippers who have already completed their SailSys registration – this greatly assists us processing entries behind the scenes.  We ask those who have not set up their log-in yet to please do so ASAP – it only takes a few simple steps:

  1. Go to SailSys home page http://sailsys.com.au/ and register an account
  2. Click on the ‘Race Entries’ link on the SBSC website keelboat page or click here
  3. Enter any series, this will prompt you to load up all your boat details.  Your boat may already be on the SailSys database so just search your sail number to save time
  4. We cannot process your race entries unless you have uploaded your current Cat 5 Safety Declaration and current Insurance Certificate
  5. Once your boat is set up you can enter as many series as you wish

You will see that there is now an option to join in with any of the Sunday racing series in a non-spinnaker division.  This gives boats that don’t normally run spinnakers the chance to join in and race on a Sunday.

Division lists, pursuit start times and PHS handicaps will be finalised nearer the start of the season.  Your early series entries help us, so please don’t delay in getting set up.

If you have any questions or need a hand, please contact us through the normal email channel This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  We are happy to arrange a phone call to step you through it.

A Towering Opportunity!

  • Are you a new member to the club keen to understand more about its operations?
  • Have you been a member for some time but still feel you have not quite “connected”?
  • Are you new to sailing and would like to better understand the sport?
  • Do you like the thought of participating in an enthusiastic team?

Then you are invited to consider joining the SBSC’s Race Management Team in the Club Tower on a voluntary basis during the sailing season.

To quote an existing team member:

“As a new club member with negligible keelboat experience, I took the leap of joining the Tower team.  With great coaching and support I came to understand many aspects of sailing and racing.  I quickly gained an overview of all aspects of the club and had the opportunity to meet and work with many skippers and crew.  Sailing opportunities arose and new friendships developed which extended beyond club activities.  In hindsight, volunteering in the Tower has been unexpectedly rewarding.”

The SBSC Tower is the onshore base for Keelboat & Trailable Sailboat races, working with the large sailboats on the water to provide a safe, efficient and informed sailing environment for all participants.  The Tower is a vital part of the structure of organised sailing.  Race Management is a dynamic, challenging environment which requires good teamwork and communication across several locations.

What?

  • Third floor Control Tower at the SBSC clubhouse
  • Work with the on-water crews via radio to manage races
  • Full training in SBSC operations, racing rules and timing of starts & finishes etc is provided
  • Full training on entering results into SailSys
  • External training through Australian Sailing is available as appropriate

When?

  • The role is performed through a flexible roster system across the whole tower team with opportunities to swap times to meet personal needs
  • Friday nights are usually between 5:00pm and can be as late as 8:00pm, October through March (break over Christmas/New Year)
  • Sunday race day times will vary depending on the program, but rostering is flexible to fit in with your availability

What to bring

  • This is an onshore role so normal clothing appropriate to the conditions
  • A willingness to learn and an interest in teamwork

Contact

  • To learn more about this unique opportunity, call Tim Bardon on 0426 581 747 or Di Jackson on 0428 077 225, or email your interest to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Rear Commodore’s Mutterings

Hi all,

Wow, What a spectacular day on the water on Sunday. With a healthy combined fleet of 30 boats in winter, anyone observing could be confused that we were in the middle of our regular season. Great also to see a huge number of members at the club afterwards enjoying the fire, musical sounds from Mietta and the warmth of club spirit.

With a beautiful off shore Easterly of about 10-12knots, everyone would have enjoyed the promised best breeze of the Winter season. From my position on the course, it looked like the Keel Boat fleet enjoyed a windward leeward course out to 25 and back with Vincetore, Shimmer and Cirrus taking the podium positions. The largest and the smallest boats finishing that close together means the handicapper is probably doing a great job! I was asked a few weeks ago if we were going to run the final races of the OTB winter series on Sunday given there were supposed to be so many members not available. Ironically we had the best turn out of the series. Thanks to Ross Martin, Deirdre Snooks on Start and Rob Campbell and Paul Martin (not related) on the Rescue RHIB for providing a fantastic course and for making yourselves available. Great to see Luke Martin (related) and Luke Marchisani out on the water for the first time in a while in their Cobra catamaran. Hopefully we’ll see plenty of both of them this season.

Great to see another new 420 in the yard and also Gary Cameron (President of the 420 Association) join our club. The SBSC has also been asked to store the 420 association’s demonstration 420 for any youth that wish to give one a go. Needless to say the club has said yes. We look forward to assisting the 420 Association foster the 420 fleet in Victoria.

As we approach the commencement of the 2023/24 season, I’ve been heartened by the offers of help, particularly when it comes to keeping our rescue craft maintained and odd jobs around the club requiring attention. Many hands make light work and to those who offer help, my sincere thanks. The club recently purchased a second hand 5m RHIB for the purposes of coaching. This RHIB will be stored in the stacker at D’Albora Marina at Martha Cove. Whilst this will cost the club about $450 per month, the plan is to offer this RHIB for hire by many of the clubs and associations that ring us requesting to hire our RIHBS. We plan to use that income to offset the costs of stacking the RHIB out the back. The benefits of this are, that our coach Matilda Richardson, can simply step on and off the boat and spend more time coaching than launching and retrieving. The new season commences on Sunday the 8th of October. NOR and sailing Instructions plus the OTB calendar and Roster will be out soon.

Cheers, Mono

LEO Survives MOB Training

The Coast Guard’s MOB dummy LEO managed to survive two MOB drills last Sunday after the Brass Monkey Race.

Risky behaviour led to him slipping of the stern of ANTHEA when his tethers failed, but he was retrieved – not without some difficulty and two attempts, and in calm conditions.  He was then passed to Y KNOT for their go.

A boat hook to grab a handle behind his neck and that is tricky, need to start at front and walk to stern so you can get multiple goes.  We did ours without motor and getting the boat close enough, but going slow enough was not easy.  Once hitched with boat hook he could easily pull someone overboard or break boat hook from the drag if boat can’t be slowed down. Rumours he weighs 85kg are exaggerated.  Official inscribed weight is that number but in lbs = 40kg.  Still, heavy enough to haul out wet.

LEO is looking forward to the next dunking from the KB fleet.  He lives locally and can even possibly be delivered to your boat – call Tony Christmas 0400 789 616 or John Wemyss 0409 410 866.

Reminder of the 31 October deadline for MOB declaration, whether it is with LEO or something / someone else is up to you.  Some photographic evidence would be good.

Hamilton Island Race Week

We had a few familiar face up north this year for Hamilton Island Race Week. Bigger Day Out, Baruch, Allegro and Rick Rogers (that we all know from Maximum Limit), sailing on his Queensland based yacht, L’Espirit.

Congratulations to Rick and the team on L’Espirit who had a very successful regatta ending up winning their division in both EHC and ORC AP.  Apparently, they concluded the regatta with a very fine celebration.
